If you’ve ever spent Christmas in France, you’ve probably seen this delicious log-shaped cake everywhere! La bûche de Noël is a French festive tradition, part cake, part art, and 100% delicious!
A vanilla, hazelnut, caramel, chocolate, or even exotic-flavoured roll, the bûche de Noël is a must-have for the festive season!
Did you know it wasn’t always a dessert?
Long ago, it was a big wooden log that people burned during the holidays, decorated with leaves and ribbons. Over time, the tradition turned into a sweet version, made in the form of a rolled sponge covered with buttercream and decorated with holly leaves or other sugar decorations.
This custom is thought to come from an old ritual marking the end of the winter solstice in Northern Europe. The cake we know today appeared around the mid-19th century and became popular in France after World War II, before spreading to other French-speaking countries.
You can also find it in a refreshing ice cream version! The bûche glacée first appeared in 1979 and became a Christmas essential from the 2000s onwards.
